Any time that I go shoot with more than one surfer, an underlying competition is felt amongst everyone. It’s a friendly competition of course, but no one wants to be the worst guy in the water. The fun part (other than getting to shoot surfing), is getting to be the judge in these little contest.

Imagine if you spent all day at the beach and your job was to keep your eye on the ocean and have to watch this…Torture. Zuma Lifeguards, what a job.

Dale Rhodes paddled out this day for about 15 minutes. He managed to catch a few waves and here’s one of them. I guess you don’t need to be out all day when you score a wave like this.

I spotted Weston Haver who has been a fixture throughout the Malibu surf for years this morning at Zuma. With a building swell expected, it seemed as though everyone including Weston was warming, here he is throwing buckets on one of the smaller ones.

With the present flurry of waves from the North West hitting California, I was lucky enough to capture Jordan Tappis at a LA secret spot pulling into a near sea level dregging barrel. This spot is not for the weak at heart, and not for any goofy foots as it’s an air drop take off

Sunday morning in front of the Lifeguard Headquarters, I caught Steven Lippman scoring some makeable and sometimes not makeable barrels at Zuma.

This was the last thing I saw when I was swimming in after shooting Russ Jones on his longboard. A beautiful evening only got better when the sun set and the sky went from blue to orange. So worth swimming in that cold water.
